I didn’t watch the Golden Globes, but I’ve read enough about the controversy, whether representation trumps misogyny.
I’d say no.
If you get a gig in front of millions on live TV and you’re given material that you know is patronizing, what do you do? Do you sacrifice your principles for the exposure?
Interestingly, I see mainly men, especially AA men, celebrating the representation and ignoring the misogyny. (I want to make it clear. They did not express support for the sexist jokes; they just chose not to address it.) The most vocal criticism came from women because humor at our expense should never be tolerated, and we know patriarchy is strong in Asian cultures.
