Chinese Breakfast

I had been thinking of the Chinese breakfast at the Peninsula Hotel (Peninsula long Jia tea or pu’er tea, non-sweetened hot soy milk, steamed shrimp and BBQ pork dumplings, lobster and scallop congee, stir-fried egg noodles with shredded chicken), but of course there is no delivery and I didn’t feel like going out, so I decided to do my own delivered version (for dinner):

Shrimp Dumpling 蝦餃
BBQ Pork Bun 叉燒飽
Preserved Egg & Pork Congee 皮蛋瘦肉粥
Soy Sauce Noodle 豉油皇炒麵
Jasmine Dragon Pearls tea
hot soy milk

I ate all the shrimp dumplings and only one BBQ pork bun and there is still plenty of congee and noodles. Yeah, it’s not as decadent, but it was very filling!

“If you aren’t at the table, you are on the menu.”

This has been used a lot by various people to say that representation is important. However, I don’t think it goes far enough. Are you *allowed* to speak while you’re sitting at the table? Are you supposed to be seen and not heard? It’s not the seat that indicates representation. It’s having the power to speak whether you’re at the table or not. Shout across the room even if you’re just a spectator. Make noises even if you’re not in the room. Sitting at the table without a voice is no representation

I’m just saying this is so cliched that no one really thinks if the analogy fits. No, we don’t want a seat at the table. We want to be heard whether we’re at the table or not.

Selling your soul to the Devil?

I didn’t watch the Golden Globes, but I’ve read enough about the controversy, whether representation trumps misogyny.

I’d say no.

If you get a gig in front of millions on live TV and you’re given material that you know is patronizing, what do you do? Do you sacrifice your principles for the exposure?

Interestingly, I see mainly men, especially AA men, celebrating the representation and ignoring the misogyny. (I want to make it clear. They did not express support for the sexist jokes; they just chose not to address it.) The most vocal criticism came from women because humor at our expense should never be tolerated, and we know patriarchy is strong in Asian cultures.
